Messina vs Hickory

How are the towns of Messina (Bleachers) and Hickory (Hoosiers) similar or different. (State at least two similarities and 2 differences.) Be sure to explain!

  1. They are similiar because each town is very interested in a specific sport. For Messina it's football and Hickory it's basketball. Another similarity is that for each of the coaches people feel differently about them. Some like them and some dont. On that note, a difference between the two is that the book gives us flashbacks to the past unlike the movie thats based all in the present times. One more difference would be that the games they play are different so the setting is as well.

  3. Well they are similar because they are in cities that every thing revolves around sports. And the coaches are not very well liked by the people. They are also diffrent because HICKORY is basketball and MECINA is foot ball.In hICKORY the whole town is against the coach and they have many diffrences. It also shows that a basketball team does not have to be popular to have potential and talent. In MECINA it also has that moral but yet has more of a story to the characters being played.

  5. They are similar because both towns support a sport and most people from those places know each other because they are small towns and besides people had problems or were against them for kind of the same reasons. They are different because they were different sports and the best player from bleachers was resentful agains the coach while the best player from the movie ended up liking the coach!

  6. They are both alike because both of these towns are crazy about sports. Also, both the coaches in the book and the movie are not really liked among the people. They are different because bleachers is about football and hickory is about basketball. Also in bleachers everyone is affected by coach rake, while in hickory we don't know if he impacts anyone yet.

  7. They are similar because both are small little hick towns and they don't have much else to do but be obsessed with sports. Also they are similar because the coaches have both hit one of their players. They are different because they like different sports and because Rake killed one of his kids and I don't think the other coach would push his kids hard enough for that to happen.

  8. Messina is more focused no football, while Hickory is concentrated on basketball. Messina was also used to having a good team that constantly won, while Hickory hadn't had a championship team before. Both towns were small and the majority of the people had jobs involving outdoors work. Messina did lumber work, and Hickory did farming.

  9. Both towns are very similar because both are relatively small towns, that have an extreme interest in one particular sport, either basketball or football. they are different however because they are interested in two different sports, and because Messina had many championships, while Hickory was just a unheard of team that had not gotten any wins since their best player, Jimmy had quit.

  10. The two towns are similar because they both are small towns barely heard of. Another reason is that they both rely on sports to keep there town interesting ;Messina is into football and Hickory is into basketball. That is also one of their differences one sport is basketball and the other is football. A second difference is Coach Rake accidentally made one of his players have a heat stroke and die while Coah Dale only punched a player.

The player in Hoosiers likes his coach. While in Bleachers, they do not get along. Also, Bleachers is more set in the past and is often makes references to the past. Hoosiers seems to be more focused on the present.

  17. The similarites are that both messina and hickery are both very rural country towns, that have preset ways of life.Such as if they were born there ,then they die there.the differences are that hickery is a town that is devoted mainly to basketball, and messina is devoted to football.Aother big difference is that the period of time is different.the story about hickery took place in 1953.and the story about messina took place in the late sixties and early 70's.as well as the mid 1980's where all of the football team memebers are older.

  22. These two towns have clear similarities and undefinite differnces, like, on similarity between Hicory and Messina is that they are very sports operated, both towns are heavily influenced and intrested in the sports there best at. Another similarity in the two towns would be the relationship between the coachs and the players because at times they may be hated but they are altimatly loved and admired by the students they teach. The two diferances between the two towns would be the coaches because even through the kids love them, Eddie Rake has lived in that town and coached in that towned and has many wins, while the other coach had just moved to the town and has had a bad reputation. The towns are also differnt as far as the sports they play in hicory they love basketball and in messina they love football.

The Spartans and the Hoosiers are similar because they both have coaches that are great but have some sort of problem or something they do that makes them different. And both of the teams are victorious in almost every game and always put up a good fight, both of the towns support there team with all the effort they can because they are both very small towns.

  36. Both Messina and Hickory were small towns nobody ever even noticed until the teams became great. Both were made great by a coach that was kind of controversial. Rake was tuff but everybody respected him, Coach Dale had his own technique of coaching and some people didn't like that. They're different because in Hickory everyone seemed not to like the new coach dale, everyone was against him. In Messina everyone loved what Rake did for the team, bringing them victories countless times. People were behind Rake all the way. Coach Dale made the Hickory team great and taking them to their very first championship, but Rake brought the Spartans to alot of championship. Messina was already know for there awesome football team, that was not to be messed with.
