After reading most of chapter one, we can infer that something serious has happened between Neely and Coach Rake. What do you think has happened that has kept Neely away from Messina hoping never to return?
I think that Neely didnt want to ever return to Messina because he didnt like coach Rake. In chapter one it said that coach Rake punched Neely in the jaw.
I would think that coach Rake has punched Neely or probably his negativity towards Neely makes him not want to come back to Messina. Because Rake always pushed the players to the furthest most limit to get what he wanted.

Neely and Coach Rake probably had a fight and Neely couldn't take all the pressure in the town of Messina. So he never wanted to return back to his old town. Also in this chapter, Coach Rake punched Neely in the jaw.
I think it was because Neely stood up to coach Rake and Rake hit him because he was so mad at him. And he didnt want to return because he thought people might not want him to come back because of what happened with Rake and that he cant play anymore because of what happened in college.
I think Neely was so emotionaly scarred by Rake he never wanted to return to such a painful place. Rake punched him in the face maybe for a simple mistake, Messina is not a happy memory for him

I belive that Coach Must have done something wrong to Neely like beat him. Possibly Coach was the one responsible for his injury? Because alot of the time they said that coach did things for money. Neely also didnt want to go through with coaches plan, By going to Tech Neely basically slapped coach in the face and perhaps he is afraid to confront him on the issue?
I have a feeling that there was a bitter end to Neely's football career--beside's the 'cheap shot' mentioned so often. Maybe the two got into a heated argument, about Neely's decision not to pursue athletics, even after recovery.
Neely and Rake got in a big argument and they dont want to talk about it. I think Rake didnt want Neely to succed as a football player because he was a jealous of Neelys talent.
Well it obvious that they dont like each other but i think rake pushed him to far and he made neely feel insecure of him self and made him regret being a man. so neeley had ran away like a lost bum in a train station.
I do believe that, in the past, there was a semi-altercation involving Coach Rake and Neely Crenshaw in which Coach Rake proceeded to punch Neely in the jaw. Maybe Neely feels that if he returns to Messina, there is a possibility that history will repeat itself and another altercation (possibly more) will transpire.

I think Neely is mad at coach Rake because he was punched by him and this ruined Neely's career because he was not able to play again. So he got a resentment against him.
Maybe Neely and Rake got in a fight over something he did during the football game or maybe something he said to Rake. So Rake punched him in the face and they were no longer on good terms.

Well Coach Rake punched Neely in his face during one of the games at half-time, they got into a big dipute. Neely probably didn't wanna go back because one of the issues he had with Coach Rake and two after his injury he didnt know how the town would look at him and he just probably didn't wanna face anything or anybody.
